Laborer

JOB TITLE:  Public Works Laborer
JOB SUMMARY:   
Under general supervision of the Public Works Director, the employee performs semi-skilled work of average difficulty, and related work as required. May be assigned to assist in more skilled work in public works and utility activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.   • Performs public works maintenance including driving non – CDL dump truck with trailer, cleans and performs minor service to assigned vehicles; does signing work; assists in construction and maintenance work using pavement tamper, pipe cutters, and other tools and equipment requiring similar skill level.
  • May be assigned to assist more skilled workers.
  • May operate construction equipment such as backhoe, skid steer loader, mowers, etc.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Good knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in construction and maintenance work;
  • Skill in the safe operation of trucks and other tools and equipment operated and used.
  • Ability to perform work in all types of weather and safely used the tools and equipment assigned; ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others; ability to express oneself, clearly and concisely, both orally and in simple writing.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check and a drug screening.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:   High School Diploma or equivalent and substantial experience in highway, road or street construction and maintenance; Or other work which would provide the attendant knowledge, skills and abilities for this work.LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:  A valid Tennessee Operator’s License appropriate to the assignment is required when vehicles are operated on public streets and roads.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Ability to pass reasonable fitness and physical standards to safely perform work, if required, as determined by city physician; vision and hearing, normal or corrected sufficient to read, write, and safely operate tools and equipment used in work; dexterity and fitness sufficient to safely operate, utilize and maintain tools and equipment used in work; ability to lift and carry about 75 pounds, though greater weights may, at times, be lifted, carried and / or placed; dexterity and fitness to grasp, crawl, crouch, bend, stoop, climb, stretch, walk, and otherwise perform physical functions of the assignment.

The working environment may be somewhat disagreeable due to minimal confinement with little protective equipment required; generally physical and working conditions are such that moderately serious cuts, bruises, burns, sprains, or illness causing confinement may occur despite provision of safety and health precautions ( some lost time is usually involved).
