Equipment Operator

JOB TITLE: Public Works Operator 
JOB SUMMARY:   
Under general supervision of the Public Works Director, employee is responsible for skilled equipment operation of considerable difficulty. An employee in this position operates a variety of trucks and other equipment in the maintenance and repair of roads and other facilities. Work may run from heavy manual labor through skilled equipment operation, but emphasis is upon skilled equipment operation.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. •    Performs a variety of public works construction, maintenance and repair work requiring high skill including: operation of backhoe, skid steer loader, motor grader, side arm mower, knuckle boom truck, bucket truck, snow plow, bulldozer, etc., performs maintenance checks to equipment operated.
•    Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; performs heavy manual labor as required; cleans equipment operated.
•    Installs and repairs conduits, installs pipes, culverts, etc.
•    Performs related work as required.
•    May be required to work outside job description on an as-needed basis

•    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Experience in or knowledge of operation of heavy equipment. Considerable knowledge of the safe operation of equipment used; good knowledge of a variety of methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in unskilled and semi-skilled public works construction and maintenance work and repair methods.
•    Skill in the safe operation of tools and equipment used in work.
•    Ability to perform unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor; ability to perform skilled operation of equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others; ability to perform heavy manual labor under adverse weather conditions; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in simple writing. 
•    Ability to pass a criminal background check and a drug screening.
 
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:   
High school diploma or equivalent. Any combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to completion of high school. Considerable experience in the operation of heavy equipment.
 
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:  A valid Tennessee Commercial Driver’s License (C.D.L.) appropriate to the assignment is required.

Ability to pass reasonable fitness and physical standards to safely perform work, if required, as determined by city physician; vision and hearing, normal or corrected sufficient to read, write, and safely operate tools and equipment used in work; dexterity and fitness sufficient to safely operate, utilize and maintain tools and equipment used in work; ability to lift and carry about 75 pounds, though greater weights may, at times be lifted, carried and / or placed; dexterity and fitness to grasp, crawl, crouch, bend, stoop, climb, stretch, walk, run and otherwise perform physical functions of the assignment.

 Work environment may be somewhat disagreeable due to exposure to several disagreeable elements or to one very disagreeable element; work environment demands minimal confinement with little protective equipment required; Generally, physical and working conditions are such that minor cuts, abrasions, bruises or burns may be encountered, despite provision of safety measures and health precautions (generally no lost time results).
